Service-area vs storefront on Google Business Profile

TLDR: If customers never visit your address, hide it and list the cities or ZIPs you actually serve. If they walk in during stated hours, show the pin. Hiding the address does not make a plumber rank a whole metro. After 8pm, Open now and distance still decide the pack. Ranking is not guaranteed.

If customers never come to your address, hide it on Google Business Profile and list the cities or ZIP codes you actually serve. If they walk in during the hours on the listing, show the address. Hybrid is both — only when there is permanent on-site signage. Hiding the pin does not make a plumber rank a whole metro. After 8pm, “plumber near me” still uses distance plus whether you are Open now. Ranking is not guaranteed.

This page is the setting, not a Maps playbook. For pack slots see how to rank in the Google Maps 3-pack. For the rest of the profile fields see the optimization guide.

Tip

Do this from your agent. On Professional, Cursor or Claude can check the profile, update hours and categories, and draft review replies through Ninja — after you confirm. Manage Google Business Profile with your agent or see Your Agent.

The one question that picks the setting

Google does not ask whether you own the building. It asks whether customers are served at that address.

| How the work actually happens | Public setup | What Google needs | |---|---|---| | Customers visit a staffed location during stated hours | Storefront — show the address | A real pin. Permanent on-site signage if you claim a storefront | | They visit you and you go to them | Hybrid — show the address and add service areas | Same signage rule. Hours are for when staff is at the location | | You go to them. Nobody is served at your address | Service-area business — hide the address, list cities or ZIPs | One profile for the whole area you serve. Still a real address for Google, just not public | | Coworking desk, virtual mailbox, or a WeWork you used once | Do not show it as a storefront | Misleading location. Google’s address guidelines want the place customers can find |

Plumbers, HVAC, cleaners, and mobile trades are the usual service-area case. Salons, dentists, restaurants, and retail are storefronts. A plumber with a staffed shop that also rolls trucks is hybrid — show the shop address, then add the ZIPs the trucks cover.

Important

If your business does not have permanent on-site signage, Google says it is not eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business. A locked warehouse with no public hours is not a shop just because you park vans there.

What is a service area business?

A service-area business visits or delivers to customers and does not serve them at the business address. Google’s examples are cleaning services and plumbers. You still give Google a real operating address so the profile can be verified. You turn off “Show business address to customers.” The public listing then shows the service area, not the street.

Google also says:

  • Service-area businesses can have only one profile for the whole area they serve. Do not spin up one listing per suburb.
  • You can set up to 20 service areas, as cities, postal codes, or other areas — not a radius around the pin.
  • The overall area should not be more than about two hours of driving from where the business is based.
  • Edits can take up to 48 hours to show.
  • If you hide the address and do not enter a service area, Google picks a local area for you.
  • Alcohol, cannabis, and weapons listings need a storefront.

Those are Google’s words on managing service areas and managing the address. They are not a ranking guarantee.

Can I create a Google Business Profile without an address?

You cannot skip giving Google an address. You can skip showing it.

Verification still needs a real location Google can mail, call, or video-check. Hiding the address only changes what searchers see. “No address” listings that use a PO box, a UPS Store, or a friend-of-a-friend couch are how profiles get suspended under representation guidelines.

If you work from home and do not want strangers at the door, hide the address. Do not invent a nicer pin in a denser ZIP.

After 8pm: which setting wins “plumber near me”

Distance is still a local ranking factor. Google’s local pack uses relevance, distance, and prominence. You cannot pay for a better local rank.

Storefront / hybrid. Distance is from the searcher to the public pin. A shop on the east side of town will lose west-side 8pm jobs to a plumber whose pin is closer, even if your trucks cover the west side on paper.

Service-area. There is no public pin. Google still has to place you somehow. Owners who hide the address and then draw 14 cities they never drive to do not “rank everywhere.” They dilute the area Google will trust. The two-hour driving tip exists because the listing is still based somewhere.

Open now. After 8pm the pack is filtered by people who want someone tonight. If your hours say closed and a competitor’s say open, you are not in that pack for that search — storefront or SAB. Special hours (storm nights, holidays) are the same switch. Posts do not substitute for true hours.

That is why the setting and the hours have to match the actual truck. A storefront that closes at 5pm will not win “emergency plumber near me” at 9pm against an SAB that is honestly 24/7 in two ZIPs.

How to hide the address and set the service area

Google’s current path:

  1. Open the Business Profile.
  2. Edit profile → Location.
  3. Next to Business location, Edit.
  4. Turn off Show business address to customers. Save.
  5. Next to Service area, Edit.
  6. Add up to 20 cities or postal codes you actually serve. Save.

Only use the hide-address switch for a service-area business. A genuine storefront or hybrid location should keep the staffed address visible.

To go the other way (SAB → storefront), you must show a customer-visitable address and, if you drop every service area, you have to be a storefront with that address on the profile.

Then check the live listing as a customer would — not while logged in as the owner. Confirm the street is gone (or present), the cities/ZIPs match the trucks, and hours include the nights you actually answer the phone.

How to change a Google Business Profile to a service-area business

You are not creating a second profile. You are editing Location on the one you already verified.

  1. Hide the address.
  2. Replace a bloated radius (if you still have a leftover radius you cannot edit) by specifying cities or postal codes instead. Google no longer lets you set a radius; old radius areas cannot be edited in place.
  3. Cut the list to places you will drive tonight, not the DMA a salesperson sold you.
  4. Wait up to 48 hours. Search the money query from inside a kept ZIP and from a dropped ZIP.
  5. If you vanish in a ZIP you still serve, add that ZIP back. If you appear in a city you refuse to drive to, remove it — those jobs become no-shows and one-star reviews.

Do not create a second listing for “the service-area version.” Two profiles for one shop is the duplicate listings problem.

Do service area businesses show up on Google Maps?

Yes. They are eligible in the areas they serve. They do not get a public storefront pin. They will not appear equally across every city on the list. Proximity still works against the registered location; the signal weakens with distance. A hidden-address plumber in ZIP A is not automatically in the pack for ZIP J forty minutes away just because ZIP J is on the service-area list.

If you need a pin because customers actually walk in, show the address. That is a storefront or hybrid decision, not a Maps hack.

The mistakes that dump the wrong jobs

Fake storefront pin. A virtual office, coworking mailbox, or “we meet at Starbucks” address is a guidelines problem. Google would rather see an honest service-area listing than a fake shop.

One listing per city. Google says a service-area business gets one profile for the whole area. Extra city listings are duplicates waiting to split reviews.

Service area the size of the state. Up to 20 areas, about two hours of driving from where you are based. Fourteen cities you never visit is how you get no-shows, not how you win “near me.”

Hiding a real shop. If customers visit during stated hours, show the address. Hiding a staffed location to “protect the address” makes the listing look like a SAB and throws away the pin that distance is measured from.

Hybrid without signage. No permanent on-site signage → not a storefront. List it as service-area.

Hours that lie after 8pm. “Open now” is a pack filter. Marking 24/7 when the phone goes to voicemail trains Google and trains reviewers.

Switching the setting and then posting. Posts you approve are not a substitute for the Location fields. Fix Location, wait 48 hours, then check the pack.

What “done” looks like

Not a screenshot of the editor. Done is:

  • The public listing matches how customers actually get service.
  • Address visible only if they can visit during stated hours.
  • At most 20 service areas, all cities or ZIPs you will drive.
  • Hours true for tonight, including special hours.
  • One profile — not a second “SAB” listing.
  • A 48-hour check: money query inside a kept ZIP, and a dropped ZIP, on a phone that is not logged into the owner account.

How do I hide my address on Google Business Profile?

Edit profile → Location → Business location → turn off Show business address to customers → Save. Then add service areas. Only do this if customers are not served at that address.

How do I verify a service-area business on Google?

Same verification as any profile — postcard, phone, email, or video — against the real operating address. Hiding the address does not skip verification. You cannot verify against a virtual mailbox and then hide it.

How do I add or change service areas?

Edit profile → Location → Service area. Add or remove cities or postal codes (up to 20). You cannot set a radius. Changes can take up to 48 hours.

Should a plumber hide the home address?

If nobody is served at the house, yes — hide it and list the ZIPs the truck covers. If you have a staffed shop with signage and walk-ins, show that shop. Do not drop a pin on a denser ZIP you do not occupy.
